St John Wales Honours its volunteers

17th June 2016

Hundreds of people from all over Wales will gather at Llandaff Cathedral this Saturday, 18 June to honour volunteers from all over Wales for their services to the community through Wales’s leading health care charity, St John Cymru – Wales.
 
The Prior for Wales for St John, Dan Clayton-Jones, OBE, will conduct an Investiture in the presence of the Prior of the Priory in the USA, Mr Palmer C Hamilton, KStJ.
 
Mr Mathew James, the Pontypridd man shot three times while protecting his partner during the Tunisian terror attack in 2015, will also be honoured with the St John Life Saving Medal.
 
A sermon will be conducted by the Archbishop of Wales and Sub Prelate of the Order of St John, The Most Revd. Dr Barry Morgan.
 
The following will be invested on behalf of HM The Queen.
 
PROMOTION TO KNIGHT / DAME OF GRACE
 
Peter Beck CVO                             Cardiff
Dr Beck, was admitted as an Officer of the Order in 2006 and promoted to Commander in 2008 following his appointment as HM Lord Lieutenant for South Glamorgan and President of the St John Council of Cardiff and the Vale.
 
Mrs Jane Collier MBE                        Gwent
Has served St John for over 50 years since joining the Cwmcarn Division as a cadet. In 1992 she was appointed Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for Wales and became Regional Nursing Officer in 2001. In 2015 she was appointed as the Priory’s National Nursing Officer.
 
David Byron Lewis                             Swansea
Mr Byron Lewis was made a Commander of the Order in 2008 when taking up his duties as HM Lord Lieutenant for West Glamorgan and President of the County’s St John Council.
 
Roy Noble OBE DL                            Aberdare
Mr Noble was made an Officer of the Order in 2002 and became a Trustee in 2008. He was instrumental in establishing our links with the WRU and today acts as an Ambassador for the charity. He is a member of the 2018 Centenary Committee.
 
Mrs Angela O’Sullivan                        Aberdare
Mrs O’Sullivan has been a committed member of the organisation for over 40 years and has a great passion for training, being an assessor and a training development adviser. In 2014 she took over the role of County Commissioner for Mid Glamorgan and completes in excess of 1,500 duty hours per year.
 
Miss Gwyneth Rees                            Aberdare
A former Training Officer and Assistant County Commissioner for Mid Glamorgan, she became a Trustee of the Charity in 2011, being appointed the Hospitaller for Wales. She is currently Lead Trustee for Training and member of the Priory Chapter Board.
 
William Strong                            Cowbridge
Brigadier William Strong became involved with the Charity in 2005 as Chair of the Patient Transport Service Board. He has shown extreme commitment to the charity and was promoted to Commander in 2008.
 
Mrs Kathrin Thomas CVO                        Mid Glamorgan
Having taken up the duties of HM Lord Lieutenant in Mid Glamorgan and President of the Mid Glamorgan St John Council, she was made a Commander of the Order in 2003.
 
PROMOTION TO COMMANDER
 
Mrs Amanda Jolliffe BEM                        Gwent
Mrs Jolliffe was appointed as an Officer of the Order in 2009 having been a member of St John since 1984. She has worked tirelessly for Griffithstown Badgers for the past 25 years and as well as running the Badger Sett she is the Assistant County Youth Officer for Gwent.
 
Mrs Margaret Jones                            Powys
Mrs Margaret Jones, a trained nurse, has been instrumental as the Regional Nursing Officer in organising training seminars for members and her medical skills have been key in developing procedures for clinical practices.
 
Mrs Ruth Lewis BEM                        West Glamorgan
Having transferred from England in 1988, she became Divisional Officer in Charge of the Loughor Division in the early 1990s and continues in that role today. She has sat on the NHQ Medical Committee and currently serves on the Eye Hospital Committee representing her county of West Glamorgan.
 
Lawrence Petterson MBE                        Cardiff
Mr Petterson is a Trustee of the charity and has been a member of the Priory Chapter Board since 2011 following his appointment as Lead Trustee for Operations. His background in the NHS has enabled him to provide the Supplies Department with expertise and guidance. He currently holds the role of Lead Trustee for St John Councils.
 
Roland Salmon                            Cardiff
Dr Salmon has been associated with St John Cymru Wales for over 25 years. A former County Surgeon in South Glamorgan and the City and County of Cardiff, he regularly undertakes duties for the Order and is the National Medical Officer to the Priory, being part of the NHQ Advisory Team.
 
Peter Vaughan QPM DL                        Mid Glamorgan
Mr Vaughan is the Chief Constable of South Wales Police. He was admitted to the Order as an Officer in 2013 and appointed to the Priory Chapter Board in 2014 as an Independent Trustee. He is a committed and strong supporter of the charity enabling us to maintain our strong links with all emergency services.
 
PROMOTION TO COMMANDER
 
Robert Aitken                            Gwent
Brigadier Aitken was first admitted to the Order in 2003 and has agreed to take up the appointment of the President of the Gwent St John Council having been appointed HM Lord Lieutenant in the County of Gwent in February this year.

PROMOTION TO OFFICER
 
Edward Cochrane                            Powys
Mr Cochrane has been associated with St John for many years and is currently the Divisional President of Llandrindod Wells Division. He has been actively involved with fundraising for Radnorshire St John Council, where he has been instrumental in securing the support of many other organisations in the area.
 
Simon Cole                                 Dyfed
Mr Cole has been a member of St John since 1994 and has recently taken up the responsibility for running the Carmarthen Division. He is also a member of the Ceremonial Team.
 
Mrs Dorothy Donovan                    Cardiff & The Vale
Mrs Donovan joined St John in 1990 at Radyr Division, where she eventually became its Divisional Officer in Charge. On relocation to West Wales she held a similar position before returning to Cardiff to the Fairwater Division. Since her appointment as Badger Sett Leader in 2013 the youth section has grown tremendously.
 
Clive Roderick Parker                    Dyfed
Mr Parker joined the Aberystwyth Division in 1997 and has been a committed and active member undertaking duties and supporting the Division with training. He has been Divisional Treasurer since 2013 and has acted as Officer in Charge during the absence of the current holder.
 
Mrs Jeanette Lavon Smith                    West Glamorgan
Mrs Smith has served St John in Wales for over 25 years. She has run multiple youth groups in the Pontarddulais Division, been County Badger Leader and a member of the County Youth Team. She is currently head of this team, a post held since 2004.
 
Roger Smith DL JP                        West Glamorgan
Mr Smith is a long standing member of the Swansea St John Council and currently President of the Plasmarl Division. He is very active in his local community and was of great assistance to St John in Swansea when he served as a local councillor.

Paul Tranter                            Powys
Mr Tranter joined St John in 1976 as a Cadet of Newtown Division. Over the years he has shown extreme commitment to the Order, willing to undertake any task requested of him. His dedication was rewarded in 2014 when he was appointed County Commissioner for Powys.
 
ADMISSION AS OFFICER
 
Akram Baig                            Barry
Dr Baig is a local general practitioner from Barry. He became a Trustee of the Charity when he took up the position of Hospitaller in March 2015 and has already proved successful in raising funds for the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. He is a member of the Priory Chapter Board.
 
Brian Fraser QFSM                        Mid Glamorgan
Mr Fraser was a member of the RCT Valleys, subsequently Glamorgan Valleys St John Council between 2001-2008, whilst serving as Chief Fire Officer of the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. He is currently the Vice Chair of the Mid Glamorgan St John Council, a position he took up in 2015.
 
David Melding AM                         Cardiff
Mr Melding has been an Assembly Member of the National Assembly for Wales for 16 years, holding the position of Deputy Presiding Officer between 2011 and 2016. He has been very supportive to St John Cymru Wales during this time.
 
The Rt. Hon. Alun Edward Michael             Penarth
Mr Michael is a former Secretary of State for Wales and a former First Minister of Wales. In the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, to which he was appointed in 2012, he has been very supportive to St John and was involved in the establishment of the Swansea Help Point.
 
Simon Prince                         Dyfed
As Chief Constable of Dyfed Powys Police Mr Prince has become a strong ambassador for the work of St John and has been instrumental in leading and facilitating the much strengthened partnership within his Force. This has resulted in over 2,000 Carmarthenshire primary school pupils receiving first aid training.
 
ADMISSION AS MEMBER
 
Mrs Gemma Atherton                    Dyfed
Mrs Atherton joined St John in 2004 and became Divisional Officer in Charge of Aberystwyth Town in 2009. She has worked consistently to ensure the Division has gone from strength to strength.
 
Harold Burrows MBE                    North Wales Region
During his role as Divisional Commander of the Welsh Ambulance Service in Gwent, he worked closely with St John and this has continued following his transfer to North Wales. In 2011 he became a member of the North West Wales St John Council and took over the role of Secretary in 2013.
 
Alyn Carroll                             North Wales Region
Mr Carroll has been a loyal member of St John for 18 years since joining the Flint Division. He has continued to give valuable service as a member, ambulance driver, trainer and Divisional Treasurer.
 
Rhys Collier                            Gwent
Mr Collier has been a member of the organisation for the last 24 years joining as a Badger in 1992, at the age of six. He has always been a dedicated and proactive member completing over 200 hours annually as a Cadet. He attends local and national duties and can always be relied upon to give assistance at short notice.
 
Mrs Sian Coughlan                         Mid Glamorgan
Mrs Coughlan initially joined the organisation in 2003 to support her daughters as youth members. Since then she has given a tremendous amount of support to the Dowlais Division. She was nominated as Divisional Vice President in 2004, becoming Divisional Treasurer in 2010 and Divisional President in 2012.
 
Mrs Katy Frowen                        Cardiff
Mrs Frowen joined as a Cadet in 1990 spending many hours on duty, eventually achieving her Grand Prior’s Award. On becoming an adult member she assisted in the Badger Sett, a role she still undertakes today.
 
Mrs Bethan Hopkins                     Dyfed
Mrs Hopkins joined the Llanelli Division in 2009 qualifying as a Patient Transport Attendant in 2011. She contributes at least 500 volunteer duty hours annually. As a long distance runner she has boosted the funds of the Division and in 2012 completed the London Marathon as a St John entrant.
 
Matthew Jones                         Gwent
Mr Jones joined the Tredegar Division as a Cadet in 1998 and has shown a continuously high level of commitment and loyalty to the organisation. He received the Special Service Shield in 2002.
 
Andrew King                            Dyfed
Mr King joined the organisation in 1996. He was one of the founders of the Carmarthenshire First Responders Scheme in partnership with the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust. He is also a member of the Ceremonial Team.
 
Robert Knapman                         Dyfed
Mr Knapman joined Llanelli Division in 2006 and became Member in Charge of the Cadet division in 2007. He currently holds the position of Regional Youth Development Officer.
 
David Manning-Lee                        Gwent
Mr Manning-Lee has been a valued and committed member of Tredegar Division for many years having joined the organisation as a Cadet in 1996. His level of dedication and enthusiasm has helped build a very successful Youth section. His hard work was rewarded in 2014 when he was promoted to Divisional Officer in Charge.
 
Mrs Melinda Legge                          Mid Glamorgan
Mrs Legge joined the Merthyr Tydfil Division in 1997 and regularly attends public duties both locally and in Cardiff. She readily assists in the running of the Cadet division and has recently qualified as a trainer.
 
Mrs Elizabeth Lewis                         Mid Glamorgan
Mrs Lewis is a dedicated member and can be relied upon to attend public duties at short notice. Having been a Badger Leader in the past, she is always willing to support the training of Badgers and Cadets when needed.
 
James Lingwood                         North Wales Region
Mr Lingwood was the secretary of the former Conwy St. John Council between 2005 and 2009. He is an active member of the North West Wales Council.
 
Miss Bronwen Newbury                     Gwent
Miss Newbury joined St John at the age of 10, and has participated in countless events and competitions. Her Cadet service culminated with her being chosen as Cadet of the Year in 2009.
 
Edward Ough                            West Glamorgan
Edward Ough is the Liaison Officer between St John Cymru Wales and South Wales Police ensuring a strong partnership exists between the two organisations. He has recently been appointed as Assistant Director of Ceremonies.
 
Gareth Parsons                        Barry
Mr Parsons is a senior trainer at St John and this year completes twenty years of paid service to the charity. He regularly assists in a voluntary capacity at First Aid competitions and First Aid training for volunteers.
 
Geraint Slack                            Cardiff
Mr Slack has given long and dedicated service since he joined as a Cadet in 1992. He has moved around the County to assist divisions in their development and has helped establish and run youth sections.
 
Hubert Allan Stevens                    Dyfed
Mr Stevens has been a hard working member of Llandeilo Division since 1970. As well as being a Cadet Officer he assists with training and became Divisional Treasurer in 2013.
 
Mrs Victoria Stevens                    Dyfed
Mrs Stevens joined St John in 2004 at Milford Haven. In 2011 she was instrumental in rejuvenating the Tenby New Hedges Division which later became the Tenby/Pembroke Division. She was appointed as Divisional Officer in Charge in 2015.

Matthew Tustin                        Cardiff
Mr Tustin is the owner of Clarity Copiers South Wales, and for a number of years has shown a keen interest in the work of St John. He worked closely with the Fundraising Department on last year’s Gala Dinner; has sponsored numerous programmes for ceremonial events and is an Ambassador for the charity.
 
PRIORY VOTE OF THANKS

These ladies have links to the Caersws Division through the membership of their young sons. As part of a ladies running club they have raised over £1,600 for the Division.

Mrs Kerry Jennings is General Manager of the Parkway Hotel in Cwmbran and has been extremely helpful in ensuring the smooth running of the annual Gwent County Conference and other events.
