New Prior for Wales installed

19th June 2017

Sir Paul Williams OBE, former Chief Executive of NHS Wales, has been formally installed as the new Prior of the Priory for Wales (Chair of St John Cymru Wales).

The Lord Prior, Sir Malcolm Ross GCVO, OBE carried out the Investiture ceremony at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff on Saturday, 17 June.

The service also marked the departure of the outgoing Prior, Mr Dan Clayton OBE, after six years in office.

The new Prior for Wales, Sir Paul Williams OBE, said:

"It is a great honour and privilege to be invested as the next Prior for the Priory for Wales. This role is hugely significant especially at a time when St John Cymru Wales is approaching its centenary year.

"I am looking forward to helping to strengthen the charity’s position as the leading first aid charity in Wales, something which would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers.

"I would also like to thank the outgoing Prior, Mr Dan Clayton OBE, for his tireless work and commitment over the last six years."

The Investiture ceremony also admitted and promoted members to the Order of St John, as well as honouring St John Cymru Wales volunteers for their service in the community.

Retired Police Superintendent, Colin Jones QPM, DL and the Right Reverend John Davies, the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, were promoted to the rank of Knight of St John, the highest accolade.

Meanwhile, 10 year old Jemma Richards, who cares for her mum at home, was presented with the Outstanding Badger of the Year Award.

PC Kirk Smith and PCSO Steven Redmond, from the British Transport Police, were given a Commendation for their quick actions in delivering CPR and helping to save a 76 year old man’s life.

A special vote of thanks was also given to Gwent Police, Dyfed Powys Police and South Wales Police for the forces’ work with St John Cymru Wales, helping to train primary school children in vital life-saving skills.
