Malta trip establishes international youth partnership

16th August 2017

A group of St John Cymru Wales cadets have established a new partnership with their counterparts in Malta, following a week-long exchange trip.

The cadets travelled to Malta to learn about the history of St John and to gain a greater understanding of the similarities, and differences, between the organisation in Malta and Wales.

The cadets were selected to take part in the trip through an application process, which involved demonstrating their commitment to St John Cymru Wales.

Seven cadets were chosen to make the trip along with two youth ambassadors, two volunteer youth leaders and the National Youth Development Officer.

As part of the project, the cadets photographed and filmed significant places of interest that will be used to develop a ‘youth-friendly’ hub of information about the history of the Order of St John.

Ellie Gorman, County Cadet, Cardiff and the Vale – Roath Park Division, said:

"I felt the things we saw and the sites we visited enabled us to learn a lot about the history and St John in Malta.

"It was interesting to observe the different responsibilities that St John Malta have to take on. Understanding that they also have a Rescue Corps with responsibility for the Fire Service and Water Rescue was very different to Wales."

Katherine Davies, Youth Ambassador – Clydach Division, said:

"I think it’s safe to say on behalf of the cadets that came on the trip, we all loved our opportunity to explore the history of Malta and how it has shaped the organisation we know as St John.

"I honestly can't thank St John enough for this opportunity and the St John Rescue Corps for the warmest welcome."

An open invitation has been made by St John in Malta to host any future groups that wish to visit, and there is interest from their cadets to visit Wales in the future.
