Recovery position

The following advice shows the first aid treatment for an unconscious casualty who is breathing

Recovery position - Adult or child

1. Maintaining an open airway throughout the procedure is vital

2. Monitor and record the casualty's level of response, pulse and breathing until medical help arrives

3. Kneel beside the casualty. Remove their spectacles and any bulky objects such as keys or phones from pockets. Straighten their legs

4. Place the arm nearest to you at right angles to the casualty's body with the elbow bent and palm facing upwards

Recovery position

5. Take the casualty's far arm and place it across their chest so the back of their hand is against their cheek nearest you

Recovery position

6. With your other hand, grasp the casualty's far leg just above their knee. Pull it up until their foot is flat on the floor

Recovery position

7. Using the raised knee, roll the casualty towards you, keeping their hand pressed against their cheek

Recovery position

8. Adjust the casualty's upper leg so that both their hip and knee are bent at right angles

Recovery position

9. Tilt the casualty's head back to keep the airway open and clear

Recovery position

10. Every 30 minutes turn the casualty from one side to the other side, if their injuries allow

Recovery position - Infant

1. Maintaining an open airway throughout the procedure is vital

2. Monitor and record the casualty's level of response, pulse and breathing until medical help arrives

3. Cradle the infant with their head pointing down to prevent them from choking on their tongue or vomit

4. Support and protect the infant's head with your hand
